Part of Why short form video reviews need a method you can audit
When to shortlist short form video best providers for English teams
How to decide when to shortlist short form video best providers for English teams, covering criteria, mobile creative evidence, platform fit and data duties.
What to take away
- Buying questions have moved on. Teams now ask for mobile-first creative evidence and platform-specific formats, not showreels alone.
- Fix your inclusion criteria before you contact anyone, so every provider answers the same brief.
- Test vertical video work against a published method, such as the short form video review methods used for comparisons.
- Ask how each provider handles framing, captions and safe areas on a phone screen.
- Agree who owns footage, logins and audience data before contracts are signed.
Set inclusion criteria before you shortlist
Shortlist inclusion criteria
- Vertical video output
- Editing turnaround
- Caption practice
- Reporting format
- Five or six providers
- Geography stated
Keep the list short. Five or six providers is enough to compare properly. Add more and you spend your time chasing quotes instead of checking evidence.
State your geography as well. If your team buys from England, say whether you will work with providers based elsewhere in the UK. Most marketing law is shared, but travel and contract terms are not.
When mobile creative evidence matters
Short-form video is watched on phones, often with the sound off and captions on. A provider whose portfolio is mostly wide-format edits is showing you work made for a different screen.
Mobile creative evidence checklist
- Framing for vertical screens
- Legibility with sound off
- Safe areas respected
- Provider explains cut choices
- Provider explains caption choices
- Provider explains crop choices
Use the mobile creativity guidance from IAB UK as a neutral checklist for framing, legibility and safe areas. Then ask each provider to explain how their edits meet those points.
If they cannot explain their choices, treat it as a signal. You want a team that can say why a cut, caption or crop was made.
Match platforms to your actual channels
Platforms reward different formats. A provider strong on one feed may be weak on another, so ask which channels they publish to most often.
On LinkedIn, sponsored content supports video formats aimed at a business audience, and the options are set out on LinkedIn's sponsored content page. Check that your provider has worked with the platform you plan to use.
Do not accept a generic channel list. Ask what posting cadence they would run for you in the first ninety days.
Check data duties and rights before you sign
Short-form work generates audience data, comments and direct messages. Under the Data Protection Act 2018, your team stays accountable for how that data is handled, even when a provider runs the account.
Ask who owns the raw footage, who holds the platform logins and how comments are moderated. Put the answers in the contract.
For a fuller buyer process, the short form video agency reviews in England article lists the questions to ask before signing.
What a weak shortlist looks like
A weak shortlist names providers without saying why they were included. It leans on showreels alone and does not record which channels or formats were checked.
It also skips data questions. When a provider holds your logins and audience data, that gap becomes a risk rather than a detail.
What a strong shortlist looks like
A strong shortlist states the inclusion criteria, the channels covered and the evidence reviewed. Each provider gets the same questions, and the answers sit in one place.
It also sets out data duties in writing. That makes the comparison fair and the decision easier to defend later.
Use a before and after comparison
The table shows how the same brief changes once criteria are fixed. Figures are illustrative examples, not market data.
Before and after comparison
Before criteria
- Providers contacted
- 12, chosen from search results
- Evidence reviewed
- Showreel only
- Data questions
- Not asked
- Decision time
- Weeks of unclear quotes
After criteria
- Providers contacted
- 6, chosen on vertical video evidence
- Evidence reviewed
- Showreel, mobile crops and captions
- Data questions
- Logins, ownership and moderation agreed
- Decision time
- One comparison sheet, for example a £3,000 monthly brief
Common questions
When should a team start shortlisting providers?
Once objectives, budget and channels are agreed. Shortlisting earlier wastes provider time and gives you quotes you cannot compare.
Does England have different short-form video rules from the rest of the UK?
Most marketing and data rules apply across the UK, including its data protection legislation. Check sector-specific rules for your own industry before you brief a provider.
How many providers should a shortlist include?
Five or six is usually enough to compare evidence properly. More than that adds admin without improving the decision.
Should we rank providers on price alone?
No. Price matters, but so do mobile creative evidence, channel fit and data handling. Compare all four before you choose.
