Why short-form video works for UK professional services
Short-form video for UK accountants, solicitors and consultants: how FCA and SRA expectations, CAP rules and UK GDPR shape what you can film.
What to take away
- Buyers of accountancy, legal and consultancy services check people before they check prices, and short-form video is the cheapest way to be checked.
- The compliance bar is set by rules firms already followFCA financial promotion rules, SRA conduct rules, the CAP Code and UK GDPR.
- Consent, client confidentiality and a named sign-off matter more than camera quality.
- Vertical video is the default on Instagram Reels and TikTok, and it also works in LinkedIn feeds.
Why professional services buyers behave differently
Professional services describes firms whose output is advice rather than goods, which takes in accountants, solicitors, surveyors and management consultants.
Buyers in that group choose on trust before price, and often on the strength of a referral. A short clip of a named partner explaining a tax deadline can do more work than a polished brand film.
The practical effect is that a face and a voice carry further than a corporate voiceover. Video lets a two-partner practice make that introduction at scale, before the first call is booked.
What the regulators expect
Neither the FCA nor the SRA bans short-form video. Both expect the substance of what you publish to be accurate, and both expect a firm to explain any claim it makes.
The Financial Conduct Authority treats a social media post as a financial promotion when it invites or induces someone to engage in investment activity. The fair, clear and not misleading standard then applies to the clip as it would to a brochure.
Solicitors work to the SRA Standards and Regulations, where publicity must be accurate and not misleading. Filming a no win, no fee claim without explaining the conditions is weak ground.
Paid promotion adds a second layer. The Advertising Standards Authority publishes the advertising codes that govern video ads, including those bought on social platforms.
Client stories carry the data protection question. Filming a client, or showing their paperwork on screen, means processing personal data, so the UK GDPR guidance from the ICO on lawful basis, consent and retention applies.
A pre-shoot compliance check
Five checks before anything is filmed.
Pre-shoot compliance checks
- Name the person who signs off every video
- Check each claim against a dated source
- Get written consent before filming anyone
- Keep raw file and approved version
- Publish captions and check colour contrast
Captions also widen who can follow the advice, and the settings that make them accurate are covered in our guide to short-form video captions and UK accessibility.
Where the format meets the rules
Not every idea carries the same risk. This table maps common professional services clips to their main exposure.
Video ideas and their exposure
Video idea
- Client win story
- Confidentiality and personal data
- Fee or rate explainer
- Financial promotion rules
- Deadline reminder
- Accuracy and date stamping
- Recruitment clip
- Equality Act 2010 duties
Main exposure
- Client win story
- Compliance partner
- Fee or rate explainer
- Compliance partner and marketing lead
- Deadline reminder
- Fee earner or practice manager
- Recruitment clip
- HR lead
Sign-off
- Client win story
- Fee or rate explainer
- Deadline reminder
- Recruitment clip
The last row is easy to miss. A hiring video that implies a preferred age or background can breach equality duties before it reaches a single applicant.
Choosing a platform and a format
Vertical video is the default on Instagram Reels and TikTok, and it holds attention in LinkedIn feeds where a lot of B2B short video marketing sits.
A solicitor explaining a lease clause suits LinkedIn. A bookkeeper flagging the self assessment deadline suits Reels and TikTok.
Most weak clips fail at the script, not the camera. Our guide to writing short-form video scripts for UK brands sets out a structure that keeps one compliance point clear inside 45 seconds.
Measuring what matters
Views flatter. For a firm, the useful measures are qualified enquiries, booked consultations and how long people stay on the contact page.
Give every video one call to action. If a clip brings nothing after eight weeks, retire it rather than defend it.
Common questions
Does the FCA ban accountants and advisers from using short-form video?
No. The FCA regulates the content of promotions, not the format. A clip promoting a regulated product must still be fair, clear and not misleading.
Can a solicitor post a client testimonial on Instagram Reels?
Only with informed, documented consent, and only if the clip does not reveal confidential information. Many firms film former clients describing the process without naming the matter.
Do the advertising codes apply to organic posts as well as paid ads?
The CAP Code covers marketing communications, which includes paid social video. A brand-owned post that promotes a service can still be judged against it.
