Build short form video buyer personas from evidence, not guesswork

Short form video buyer personas work best when built from search data, interviews and platform signals, with consent handled under UK GDPR rules.

What to take away

  • The choice you face is which hook and offer to test next, so build a persona that settles that, not one that lists demographics.
  • Gather three kinds of evidenceyour own analytics, search and comment data, and interviews with real customers.
  • Personal data held for persona work sits under UK GDPR, while cookies and marketing messages follow PECR 2003.
  • Test each persona against one live ad set before you brief a creator or commit a budget.

Start from the decision, not the demographic

Most short form video buyer personas list age, city and job title. That tells you who watched. It does not tell you what to make next.

Persona decision question

What decision does this persona inform?

Yes

write it at the top

No

file and forget

A persona for a Manchester retailer might exist to settle one question: open with the price, or the problem? Write that question at the top of the page.

Our parent guide on audience research sets out the wider method, including how to choose segments and record what you learn: short form video audience research guide for England.

A persona with no linked decision tends to be filed and forgotten.

Sources that give you evidence

Three sources do most of the work. Your own platform analytics show which videos hold attention and where viewers leave.

Search data and comments show the words people use. Google's crawler overview explains how discovery works when you publish a landing page behind a video.

Interviews give you the reasoning the numbers cannot. Five to eight conversations, compared against your comment sections, are usually enough to hear a pattern.

Search tools tell you how often a category is looked up, not how people feel about it. Treat demand data as a list of questions to ask.

Record each source with its date so a colleague can check it later.

Handle personal data properly

Persona work often starts with a platform export. UK GDPR requires a lawful basis for holding that data, and people must be told how it is used.

The ICO's online safety and data protection guidance covers how platforms and advertisers should treat user data, including in feeds aimed at younger audiences.

If you plan to retarget a persona by email, text or cookies, read the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 before you send anything.

Keep notes in one place, remove names where you can, and set a deletion date.

Test the persona before you scale spend

A persona is a hypothesis, not a fact. Give it a small budget and one variable.

Take two hooks that speak to the same persona and run them against the same audience for a week. If neither moves, suspect the persona rather than the editing.

For the interview side, our guide to short form video customer interviews in England shows how to prompt for specifics instead of opinions.

Write the result down. A persona that survives two tests belongs in the creative brief. One that fails should be dropped.

Common questions

How many short form video buyer personas does a small team need?

Two or three is usually enough. Each one should map to a different buying question, not a different age bracket.

Can we build personas from platform analytics alone?

You can start there, but analytics show behaviour rather than motive. Add interviews before you write the brief.

Do persona notes count as personal data?

If a note identifies a living person, or could with other information you hold, it does. Store it accordingly and set a deletion date.

How often should personas be reviewed?

Review them when a campaign fails twice, or when your main platform changes its feed. A quarterly check keeps them honest.
